Steve’s Story

I own a Pest Control Company and we were called out to a loft above a London Tube Station recently. When I went up there it was obvious that pigeons had been inhabiting the space for many years. There were small mountains of guano throughout the loft and a substantial population of pigeons. The adults flew out of the broken window in the loft roof but what was left behind were all the young that couldn't yet make the flight and also all the squabs in the nests which all had to be culled. They had all been happily living there for over 7 years until one day the loft hatch opened and it was the beginning of the end.

When I thought about it, what came to mind were places in the world where this happens to humans. For example, in Myanmar, where the junta have burned hundreds of villages, Russian troops going into the towns and cities of Ukraine, The Taliban walking into Kabul and the people desperately trying to flee.

In all these places, people have lived their lives in their villages, towns and cities only for it to be brutally taken away from them overnight. The sudden, devastating reversal of their reality.
